10 photos from Shimza and Black Coffee’s surprise B2B at Kunye Johannesburg
The pair came together to perform a historic – and rare – back-to-back in Johannesburg last weekend
Last weekend, South Africa’s sought after Afro house heroes Shimza and Black Coffee joined forces in a historic – and rare – back-to-back at Kunye, South Africa’s roving open-air event series, bringing the party to a sold-out Huddle Park in Johannesburg.
The day-to-night event kicked off on Saturday, November 2, with a seismic line-up including Gordo, DESIREE, Mpho.Wav, FKA Mash, and more, with Shimza at the top of the bill. In the lead-up to his monumental closing set, Shimza took to Kunye’s TGTHR Stage where he was joined by DJ Fresh, performing a classic all-vinyl set as the sun set below the stage.
Legendary South African DJ and producer Black Coffee made a surprise appearance on Kunye’s main stage during a closing set from Shimza, where the pair went toe-to-toe for a full 90 minutes pulling out Afro house classics and deep house groovers late into the night. Gordo, Major League Djz, Oskido, and more witnessed the iconic moment from behind the booth in a true homecoming for the reunited pair.
"Kunye’s narrative was told that night," says Shimza. "We created a platform for all to engage and come together. That is what happened, and it was a very special moment for our story, our music, and our culture to the world."

Kunye returns to Cape Town this December with a three-hour headline set from Shimza, as well as performances from Kitty Amor, Sun-El Musician, Kid Fonque, and more. Grab your tickets here.
