Anja Schneider: "A beautiful girl with attitude can wear anything"
The Berlin techno icon talks jumpsuits, running gear and why Berlin has never been a high-fashion city
The glasses are Mykita, which is a brand from here in Berlin. These are really futuristic, for the outfit. I usually wear these for skiing. I know it’s not really techno, but they have a certain style.
I showed my son this jumpsuit and he was like, ‘Oh my god, Mum. Are you sure? You’re an astronaut now? It’s not carnival!’ I love to buy him clothes and he hates it because I’m buying him colourful tops and he’s like, ‘I can’t wear this. I want a Fortnite T-shirt!’ I have to pick him up from school after this interview. I think I’ll wear this!

This jumpsuit has a Major Tom vibe. It’s by a Romanian brand called Gruppa. It’s quite ravey and looks like something I might have worn to the Love Parade in 1995; very 90s-inspired. I wear jumpsuits a lot. When you’re travelling with just hand luggage, you have one jumpsuit, you’re dressed and it looks good.
This morning I found these old Ann Demeulemeester sneakers. I got them in Antwerp in her flagship store around 10 years ago. She’s a Belgian designer from Antwerp who I really love. Her clothes have an androgynous touch which I find very sexy. I love her specific gothic, punk, grunge look. I love black all over, and a very minimalistic style, like my music. Patti Smith is the muse of the label and she also had a big impact on me.
My bodysuit is from an underwear shop called DSTM, on Torstrasse. I try to mix expensive brands with random things. I love sheer mesh matched with sporty stuff.
Berlin was never a high-fashion city. It’s becoming a little more like that now, but back in the day, around 2000, people weren’t making themselves look nice to go out. People were making themselves look ugly to go out in Berlin. And a beautiful girl with attitude can wear anything.

I run a lot. For me it’s kind of like meditation, and I go every day. I wear Nike leggings, a Nike pullover and 032c socks I bought in Soho House – I had no idea it was a super-fashionable brand!
The one thing every girl can understand – especially when playing clubs or festivals – is that going to the toilet while wearing a jumpsuit is the most terrible thing.
My best girlfriend from London made this necklace for me when I started my record label, Sous. I wear it every day.

On a run in Berlin I discovered a really colourful shop, and a designer called Wilfried Pletzinger, who makes clothes from old ice hockey trikots [shirts]. Every piece is unique. I wear one with a tiger on and people always ask me about it.
