The best DJ mixes of the year 2025 so far - January - Music - Mixmag

Elbert Phillips ‘A Frankie Knuckles Classics Tribute’

Shortly after the date that would have been the late, great Frankie Knuckles’ 70th birthday, his friend - and fellow Chicago DJ and producer - Elbert Phillips shared this heartfelt tribute mix that floods your veins with good energy for close to three hours. Comprising “a retrospective of [Frankie’s] career from his residency at the Warehouse to selections that I think he would appreciate today”, it’s a timeless tapestry of soul-affirming music.

bela ‘NR Sound Mix 069’

Deep, sub-rattling rhythms are the throughline of this exemplary mix of dubstep, garage, grime and other bass-loaded sounds from South Korean DJ bela. It’s a transportative journey into the depths of low-end pressure.

DJ Cable ‘Grime Classics Mix Vol. 2’

DJ Cable digs in the crates to pull out a slew of classics from grime’s golden era, blended together in a dizzying flurry of hype-inducing beats and bars. It bangs on both a selection and technical level, with an overhead camera showcasing exactly how he pulls off some of his mixer wizardry, cutting between the likes of Ruff Sqwad, Plastician, JME and Wiley.

¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U ‘Boiler Room: Tokyo’

If you thought a DJ set that opens with a blend of Akira Ifukube’s original 1954 Godzilla theme and the THX Deep Note sampled by 100 Gecs’ ‘Dumbest Girl Alive’ was something that only your wildest cheese dreams could have conjured up, then you clearly have not come across the one and only ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U. While those already-acquainted have been in awe of the Osaka-based club sorcerer’s ability to ply a head-spinning array of genres in a matter of minutes during his sets for some time — Yukimatsu’s latest Boiler Room showcases his ability to tear down even the most recognisable of club bangers to their bare bones, creating blends that you would never have thought were humanly possible. But then, it’s difficult to believe ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U is a mortal being as he electrifies the breathless Tokyo crowd. There’s a reason he’s “your DJ’s favourite DJ.”

DJ Harvey ‘Live at Mercury Rising - Pikes, Ibiza’

Getting transported to the White Isle for DJ Harvey’s Mercury Rising residency for less than the price of a Freddo? And it’s for a good cause? The beloved DJ shared the full recording of his set at Pikes from September this year to benefit those affected and displaced by January’s LA Wildfires — in true Harvey style, it’s a four hour voyage through impossible-to-get-out-of-your-head disco riffs, sleek ’80s synths and uplifting vocal declarations. An absolute bargain if you ask us.
