Listen back to Mixmag’s 40th anniversary mix series on Radio 1 Dance
In celebration of Mixmag’s 40th birthday, we linked up with Radio 1 Dance to bring you a five-part series through the month of September - check them out right here
Throughout the month of September, we brought together five of the most forward-thinking DJs, selectors, and producers from around the globe to take part in a five-part mix series on BBC Radio 1 Dance in celebration of Mixmag’s 40th birthday. Kicking off on September 1, we enlisted a stellar all-female cast to help us celebrate from every corner of the world - Seoul to Pretoria, Mexico City to Kyiv to New Delhi.
BBC Radio 1 Dance Presents Mixmag hit the airwaves every Friday night throughout the month on both Radio 1 and Radio 1 Dance, and to kick us off, we locked in an experimental bass mix from Ukraine’s human margareeta. The Kyiv-hailing DJ, producer, and promoter has been driving activism in Ukraine amidst Russia’s invasion. “Happy Birthday Mixmag,” she says. “The mix you’re listening to was recorded during another Russian drone attack on Kyiv. Please remember that Ukraine needs your support in order to keep democracy in the world!”

We also enlisted Mexico-based Argentian TAYHANA to take on the next mix of high-energy club-fillers, followed by a luscious 60-minute takeover from India’s Zequenx, packed with acid cuts. The penultimate mix came from South Korea-born duo Salamanda with some deep, leftfield sonics, before we handed over the reins to our final artist, South Africa’s queen of amapiano: DBN Gogo, for an hour of gqom and amapiano specialties.
We’re not blowing out those birthday candles out just yet - there’s still a chance to listen back. Get stuck into the action and check out BBC Radio 1 Dance Presents Mixmag below.
