Here’s what went down at Mixmag’s 40th birthday party at Outernet
We teamed up with Ballantine’s and Outernet to throw a huge birthday party featuring a wall-to-wall photo exhibition, and a stacked line-up of DJs
On Thursday (October 26) we celebrated 40 years of Mixmag with a wall-to-wall photo exhibition at London's Outernet displaying four decades worth of Mixmag covers, journeying through the history of dance music and club culture. Here’s what went down.
We took over Outernet’s exhibition space in the heart of central London covering each wall with an immersive display of Mixmag history, dating back to our first ever cover with Shalamar in 1983. Other covers that appeared as part of the exhibition included the likes of Madonna, Carl Cox, Andrew Weatherall, Fatboy Slim, Aaliyah, Daft Punk, Aphex Twin, Honey Dijon, Björk, Peggy Gou, and Gorillaz.
We also invited four DJs to soundtrack our immersive exhibition, kicking off with a free-flowing house set from Junior Simba. Next up, Dan Shake supplied a classic selection of party starters, before London duo Joy Anonymous took over with an hour of house and disco bangers. We topped off the night with a spectacular set from Jyoty, who brought the evening to a rowdy close.
We teamed up with Ballantine’s to provide the drinks, curating a selection of delicious whisky-based cocktails matched to classic dance music eras and pivotal figures. The ‘Junglist’ gave a nod to jungle legends such as Goldie, who first appeared on the cover of Mixmag in 1997, while the ‘Acid Sour’ threw it all the way back to the ‘80s in celebration of the acid house era and the Second Summer of Love.
Our 40th-anniversary party also helped to raise money for CALM, a charity that does incredible work for suicide prevention. Suicide is the biggest killer of 15-39 year olds in the UK, and CALM exists to change that.
