The best DJ mixes of the year 2023 so far - August - Music - Mixmag

HorsegiirL b2b MCR-T at Sunshine Farms

Pairing these two together for this almighty back-to-back was never going to be normal, so of course we find them galloping around Sunshine Farms. horsegiirL is in her natural habitat of the barn while MCR-T works his shift as a farmer on his tractor. Not like your usual DJ stream, instead of being mesmerised by a gurning teenage audience, we’re watching wildlife as if it’s an episode of Countryfile on acid. Oh and don’t worry, of course, they drop their iconic track ‘My Barn My Rules’.

Fafi Abdel Nour ‘Multisexual Mix #12’

The high-energy groove machine Fafi Abdel Nour has blessed us with another incredible set, playing around with a whole concocation hypnotising house that draws everyone to the dancefloor. Strongly recommended.

1Morning on HÖR Berlin

LA-based 1Morning puts on a techno clinic in Berlin, taking over the HÖR bathroom with a vinyl set that’s raw and percussive but also filled with funk and groove. Working the mixer with lively volume chops as he cuts between a stack of classic records, it’s an energising hour that will have you hooked.

boxofbox ‘Honcho Podcast Series 119’

North Carolina-based boxofbox crafts a rousing three hour mix for the Honcho Podcast Series that’s enthralling throughout. Opening with the utopian sounds of Seal’s ‘Future Love Paradise’, it sucks you into a sense dancefloor bliss, serving up plenty of fun twists and turns that give you those “yesss!” moments in the club that send you wild. A pitched-up Stones Roses blend is one such moment, fitting perfectly into the pulse of acid, house, techno and d’n’b that form the foundation. Whereve you are, you’ll be standing up and whooping by the end.

Sister Zo ‘PMx 14’

Sister Zo steps up to Peder Mannerfelt’s PMx series with a sweltering mix fuelled by agitated dancefloor rhythms and murky bassweight. It’s primed to send a dancefloor to the cusp of overload and keep them there with tight control of tension, also empowering vital moments of club catharsis when letting loose into all-out mania.

Lukas Wigflex ‘Waterworks Takeover on Rinse FM’

Lukas Wigflex returns to Rinse FM as part of the Waterworks takeover that also features Saoirse, Charisse C & Tash LC. The Nottingham native buzzes around the decks for a high-energy hour that shifts between gorgeous, atmospheric tracks such as Midland’s ‘Drift in the Algorithm’ and absolute roof-raisers like Errorsmith’s ‘Who-Is’ & Verraco’s ‘Escándoloo’.

Skrillex + Peekaboo + Flowdan + Sicaria + M1ONTHEBEAT + Sarz ‘Badders Radio on Kindred’

Skrillex continues his 2023 philosophy of ‘they won’t guess what I do next’ with a surprise appearance on community radio station Kindred. Over the course of two hours, the brostep sensation spars with Peekaboo, Flowdan, Sicaria, M1ONTHEBEAT & Sarz as Badders Radio. The off-the-cuff linkup in West London celebrates ‘Badders’, Skrillex, Peekabo, Flowdan & G-rex’s new track. The show provides a full-circle moment for the star as it cements his place as a respected peer in the UK dubstep scene a decade after his time as its arch enemy.

Ben UFO & Pearson Sound ‘Hessle Audio on Rinse FM’

When two of the Hessle heavyweights link up armed to the teeth with dubs, we already know what’s going to happen, but it doesn’t make it any less exciting. Ben UFO & Pearson Sound traverse through house, techno, garage, acid and dubstep with consummate ease, certifying their status as some of the world’s top tastemakers. The Hessle Audio trio have been particularly busy over the last 12 months, with extensive touring to celebrate 15 years of their groundbreaking label, Pangaea writing his second album, Pearson Sound adding to his production credits with work on Jessy Lanza’s ‘Love Hallucination’ and Ben UFO fulfilling his duty as the world’s best DJ™ by being everywhere all at once. This makes it all the more special when two members go back-to-back for their Rinse FM residency.

EQUISS b2b Lektor Scopes ‘Balamii - August 2023’

Producer EQUISS, part of the New Jersey club group OSSX, invited fellow member Lektor Scopes to join his August Balamii slot for a winding journey between homegrown club sounds, euphoric breakbeats, thumping Detroit techno and Chicago juke. Any mix that incorporates Roy Davis Jr’s classic ‘Gabriel’ early on is bound to be sensational. In a manner akin to their legendary 100% unreleased mixes, familiar soulful samples are reworked, edited and pumped full of addictive breaks for two hours of dance-worthy jubilance. A breakdown gears the mix’s second half towards the higher BPM rave-ready sounds of footwork, breaks and hyperspeed juke, with plenty of original exciting, unreleased material weaved in. The mix comes to a head with liquid drum ‘n’ bass, Southern rap-fused jungle and womp filled darkside.

Hodge B2B Sully at Outlook Festival

The much-loved Outlook Festival in Croatia does a lot to attract travelling festivalgoers to Tisno’s sandy beaches. For the third installation of Outlook Origins, what could be better than inviting two sub-bass chiefs together for a resounding sound clash! This 30 minute snippet from Hodge and Sully’s heavyweight back-to-back set opens with booming breaks and travels from pulsating basslines to stomping garage and grime, then breaks and back to the womps again. A true celebration of sub-heavy stompers and all things bass from these two low-end legends.

Coco Bryce ‘Future Retro Special August 2023 on Balamii’

A favourite in the world of sliced up breakbeats, Coco Bryce’s August Balamii show is curated around Tim Reaper’s essential Future Retro Label. His tasteful selections weave through older skool sounding cuts from pioneers like Kid Lib and forward-thinking medleys of footwork jungle and jungle techno to create a transcendent 160 - 170 BPM journey.

IZCO ‘Rinse X Brighter Days with Reek0, Dochi & S.I (live)’

When IZCO and the Brighter Days crew come together, something magic happens. This time he’s joined by London rappers Reek0, Dochi and S.I for an hour-long summer blowout party spinning everything from garage to reggae, while Brighter Days crew members take it in turns to jump on the mic and provide ad-lib vocals.

Shampain ‘Live from The Big Top, Galway’

In August, Shampain and KETTAMA teamed up to curate a new day festival in Ireland, G-Town Festival, hosted in Galway’s Big Top. During his headline performance, Shampain quickly got into the heavier sonics as he opened to a cheering crowd, running through hard dance, jungle, and an eclectic selection of edits, including a rowdy take on Faithless’ ‘Insomnia’.

Sir Hiss ‘Mixmag In Session’

In August, Sir Hiss provided a brand new Mixmag In Session mix showcasing his shift from dubstep and 140 to grime-fused electro, throwing in a handful of unreleased cuts and tracks from the likes of Skee Mask, Longeez, and Aloka. “I tried to record an all-encompassing mix filled with everything that I feel represents me as an artist at the moment,” he said.

James Blake ‘Mixmag Cover Mix’

You can’t deny James Blake is having a moment. Returning to the dancefloor with his new album ‘Playing Robots Into Heaven’, the artist seems hell-bent on demonstrating why he gained such popularity within the club sphere in his early career — though, as his Mixmag Cover Interview detailed, he won’t be doing so by trying to recreate his early work. This is demonstrated in the warped depths of Blake’s Mixmag Cover Mix, refusing to settle in any mood, constantly shifting between elements of spine-tingling deconstructed percussion, soft vocal-driven R&B, four-to-the-floor disco and high NRG kicks — there’s even a couple of bassline bangers thrown in there for good measure. Our club king is back!

Colored Craig ‘RA. 898’

There’s a reason choreographers can so often find themselves moving from the dancefloor to behind the decks, and that is because with a mind hard-wired to recognise everything we need to get us dancing - they make fucking great DJs. Los Angeles’ Colored Craig is a near-perfect case study for this, delivering a mix for RA’s podcast series that will compel you to tap your toes for the extent of its hour-and-a-half duration. Refusing the let the energy down for even a millisecond, this mix is a master stroke in up-tempo, old school house music; with selections from Kerri Chandler, Crystal Waters, Seth Carter and more, it will have your heart beating with the same fervour as if you’d spent three hours tearing up the club.

DJ Babatr ‘DJ Mag On Cue’

Raptor house pioneer DJ Babatr lets rip overe the course of this hour-long mix, plunging listeners into a vibrant barrio party in Caracas. Propulsive Latin rhythms lead the charge, with the energy ramping up via runaway drum rolls, urgent vocal calls and brash synth sounds. An airing of the undisputed track of 2022, his Nick León collaboration ‘Xtasis’, is the cherry on top.

DJ K ‘Fact Mix 923’

Brazilian baile don DJ K showcases the raucous bruxaria variant of the sound. With the name meaning ‘witchcraft’ or ‘sorcery’, there’s a slightly evil and unhinged present in the dark take on the sound, with piercing synths, aggressive drums and ominous bass throbs.
