The best DJ mixes of the year 2023 so far - May - Music - Mixmag

Akanbi ‘Crack mix 498’

Having already gained a reputation for deep, narrative-driven sets that combine everything delicious from the worlds of groove and electro — Brooklyn-based DJ Akanbi delivers an intense-yet-moreish hour-long mix for Crack. Selections include Al Wooton, Laksa, DJ Marcelle, Toumba, Atom™ and E-Unity, creating a mix that is polished, deconstructed and unravelling.

Valesuchi ‘Mixmag In Session’

With her feet firmly planted in the groove, it will come as no surprise to anyone familiar with Brazil-by-way-of-Chile DJ Valesuchi that her hour-long In Session mix is brimming with low-end percussion, cavernous-but-warming bass and dreamy blends. Recorded on a “sunny afternoon in Rio de Janeiro”, it features tracks from NT89, Fortunato, Katerina and more. A mix that will make you want to move as much as it will make you want to connect with your inner-self.

DJ Flounce ‘Daisychain 277’

Berlin-based DJ Flounce is heavily influenced by drum ‘n’ bass and golden era hip hop, and despite this mix being more driven by low-end bass and high-energy club music, those influences can be felt within its construction. Whether it’s the old skool, off-kilter breaks or the atmospheric synths and piano stabs, this mix feels more driven by juxtaposition than bewilderment; putting tracks from the likes of Burial, Bitter Babe, DJ Swisha, Ehua and Coco Bryce up against each other to beautiful effect.

Cameo Blush & uu rhythm on Rinse FM

Teaming up on their latest Rinse FM mix, London’s Cameo Blush and unknown - untitled head honcho uu rhythm bring endless energy over the course of an hour. Featuring tunes from Anunaku, Kessler, Mor Elian, as well as some unreleased cuts, they perfectly match electro, acid, and UK bass in an effortless mix.

Conducta in The Lab LDN

It doesn’t take long for Conducta to cause a ruckus in a room, and he certainly didn’t hesitate when he made his Lab LDN debut in May. The garage connoisseur came in thick and fast with heady, quickfire rhythms - turning the room on its head via garage, breaks, bass and cheeky curveballs with reworked popular hits.

Aleksandir on Piñata Radio

Following a three-minute orchestral orchestral opener, Aleksandir’s playful style sees him jump through multiple sounds in his recent mix for Montpellier-based station Piñata Radio. From Hodge’s bass-forward cut ‘Where I Wanna Be’ to Leon Vynehall’s inescapable ‘Black Dove’, Aleksandir gives a taste of his current musical influences across an unrelenting hour-long mix.

Jayda G ‘Boiler Room: London’

You can already tell this is an iconic Boiler Room from the person desperately trying to capture the first track on their iPad. Jayda G creates a sophisticated, house party vibe with some jazzy house and mellow tunes that allow space for the crowd to really get grooving before going off. A standout moment comes with Jayda transitioning from the mania of Grammy-nominated ‘Both Of Us’ into Clivilles' & Cole ‘92 classic ‘A Deeper Love’ with its rousing Aretha Franklin vocal sample.

SPECIALISTS + LOVEFOXY on Foundation FM

Need a quick pick-me-up? This mix has you covered. Lovefoxy has managed to blend what feels like every house anthem from the classic and contemporary eras into two hours of pure bliss. So sit back and relax - or dance - to this stellar set — you won’t be left wanting.

Bitter Babe ‘Dekmantel Podcast 430’

A feisty, high-energy mix, Bitter Babe fires from all angles across this fluorescent combination of tracks. Raucous Baile funk, experimental cumbia and the sweat-soaked energy of Changa Tuki are just some of the sounds that rise to the fore amid pumping bass and breaks. No genre boundaries, just vibes.

Barker ‘3024 TAPES 005’

A rare treat from Barker, who steps up to Martyn’s 3024 TAPES series with a welcome addition to his scarce online mix footprint. Exploring what he terms as the “currently popular yet controversial 140-160bpm range”, he pulls back from the temptations of ‘hard and fast’ kick drums and delves into spacey melodies, broken breaks and blissful ambience in a characteristically singular set.

Sir Hiss ‘Recorded Delivery: #2’

Getting through 17 tracks inside 30 minutes, this is half an hour of bass-loaded power from No More Mailouts bossman Sir Hiss. It’s a ride — packing in pummelling bassweight, agile grime flutes and slippery IDM melodies — but still leaves space to breathe. Lighter, spacious tracks fit between the screwface moments, with tight blends causing maximum impact.

dogheadsurigeri ‘TANK Mix (2000s Ibiza Trance Mix)’

Prepare to transcend as you hit play on this mix by Poland’s dogheadsurigeri: It’s fast, it’s euphoric, it’s everything you could want from a mix tagged with “2000s Ibiza Trance”.
