The best DJ mixes of the year 2024 so far - June - Music - Mixmag

Aurora Halal ‘Crack Mix 581’

Aurora Halal’s innate ability to inject sparkling optimism into cavernous bass, electro and deep house is one of the reasons that the Sustain Release and Mutual Dreaming founder has become a mainstay in basement venues both at home in New York and throughout Europe. Her 55-minute Crack mix continues in this grand tradition, emparting glistening percussion and tingling synths above a hypnotic mixture of acid, breakneck electro and fizzing bass thuds. As mind-bending as it is euphoric, Halal manages to carefully toe the line between keeping things consistently high-energy, by utilising a myriad of percussive elements, while still allowing soothing atmosphere and twinkling bleeps and bloops to have their moment. Bliss.

Big Ang ‘The Mix 016’

Many have tried, but no one can make a bassline wobble like her Majesty, HRH Big Ang. So by royal decree, her contribution to Mixmag’s The Mix series is chock full of speedy g so boisterous, organ cuts so bellowing, and acapellas so rapturous that we now have chronic dry mouth from pining over a Niche night out. Functioning as both a high-energy hour of dancefloor stimuli for her quiver-loving subjects, and a facial muscle exam to see how long you can resist scrunching your cheeks together as taut as if you’ve just emptied a packet of warheads into your gob (our personal best was around three minutes btw) — Big Ang’s mix employs bass delights from DJ Zinc, Jon Buccieri and Silva Bumpa along with glistening house by way of Todd Terry and Kathy Brown. All tied together by some verified whoppers from Big Ang herself. God save the Queen.

BFTT’s ‘Take it Higher Mix’

Ahhh… remember that one day in June where the sun came out? Well no, it’s somewhat difficult to remember with the UK falling back into torrential rain and ashtray grey settings for the bulk of ‘summer’, but at least we have Manchester-based DJ, producer and YCO boss BFTT’s ‘Take It Higher Mix’ for Resident Advisor to rejog our memory. Giving his rowdy palette of full-throttle rave, pounding bass and frenetic breaks a Vit-D injection with serotonin-pumpers courtesy of Sylvester, Physical Therapy and Nick León, BFTT manages to keep the energy high, while remaining effervescently sunny in outlook. An ice cold pint in a beer garden on a 30-degree day, but in mix form.

Benji B on BBC Radio 1

Benji B’s BBC Radio 1 residency is always a must listen, with the iconic DJ showcasing a range of global and deep rooted sounds. For this two hour instalment he’s joined on the guest mix by Brooklyn’s Kitty Ca$h, as well as South Asian multi-hyphenate Raji Rags who selects three records. For his mix, Benji starts off slow and emotional, payinf respects to the Palestinian struggle amid the ongoing catastrophe of Israel’s offensive on Gaza by playing ‘Gaza is Calling’ by Mustafa. He then goes on to raise the tempo, with a selection of tracks by everyone from Kaytranada to James Massiah, as well as dropping a new Babyfather dubplate, some John Glacier and BADBADNOTGOOD.

Kojay & T. Williams ‘THE OONTS SHOW’ on Rinse FM

South London-based, Birmingham-born Kojay linked up with old school funky head T. Williams for a power hour on Kojay’s Rinse FM residency ‘THE OONTS SHOW’. In between tunes, the pair discuss the power of soulful music, their favourite shows and nights, and T. Williams’ time in Canada. The link-up, put together by Defected, was in celebration of T. Williams’ latest EP ‘Emotions’ which dropped on June 14. On the show they rattle through a selection of songs from the EP, as well as a number of other tracks, from funky classics to high-energy salsa-influenced tunes and deep broken beat, before rounding it all up with some soulful house selections.

Scorpion Kings ‘Boiler Room x Ballantine’s True Music 10: Johannesburg’

Amapiano duo Scorpion Kings (made up of DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small) are often heralded as the godfathers of amapiano, having played a large part in the global spread of the South African sound. Their Ballantine’s x Boiler Room show sees them return to deep and spiritual sounding roots rather than some of their more energised selections, for a set that’s rich with emotion from start to finish. Dreamy vocals, saxophones and pianos are the name of the game, as the South African legends showcase the development and fine tuning of the amapiano wave.

Manami ‘The Mix 018’

Welcoming a new era of her DJing style, Manami has jumped into the deep end of bass. In this exclusive insight into her rebrand, her Mixmag mix explores swirling vibrations and a bunch of wobblers to get your mind-boggled. We’re excited to hear more of this Manami in the club.

Bianca Oblivion ‘Daisychain 337’

If you need a pick-me-up to contrast with the not-so-summery weather, well look no further. Bianca Oblivion takes you for a ride around the current LA scene and all of the city's influences. From its vibrant ballroom scene to its Latin American beats, the mix also spotlgihts some new music from Oblivion.

Slimzee with Hypho on Rinse FM

You need to fully prepare yourself for this one as Rinse FM hero Slimzee and young gun Hypho pull out all the stops to make this a weapon of a mix. Melding together a concoction of grime beats and slowing them right down to merge with some old skool dubstep, this two-hour-long session is an experimental ode to the ‘00s.

CLIKK ‘BDB Mix Series 024’

Marking the 24th edition of BlueDollarBillz’s mix series, Birmingham-based DJ and producer CLIKK dives into a full-throttle garage set, including a handful of his own unreleased tracks, as well as selections from Prozak, Introspekt, DJ Cosworth, and more.

Special Request B2B Anz ‘Boiler Room x AVA Festival’

Over in sunny Belfast, Special Request and Anz went toe-to-toe at AVA Festival in June on the festival’s 360-degree Nomad Stage delivering steady club cuts into peak-time shellers featuring tracks from the likes of Tim Reaper, Bok Bok, and Underworld, as the crowd surrounding them descend into chaos.

Sofia Kourtesis ‘RA.943’

Following the release of her introspective album ‘Madres’ in 2023 which explored personal tales of motherhood, Sofia Kourtesis embarks on a new sonic journey as captured in her recent mix for Resident Advisor, platforming uptempo house and bass offerings from the likes of LUXE, Chloé Robinson, and IceMorph, as well as a brand new track in collaboration with Daphni, ‘Unidos’.

DJ SWISHA ‘Kiosk Radio‬ x The Lot Radio‬ x Horst Festival 2024’

Horst has earned a reputation as one of Europe’s leading electronic festivals since its expansion and relocation in 2019. Now, that’s entirely down to this set from DJ SWISHA, but being there and experiencing it must have been the kind of thrillride that has anyone handing out GOAT status with a quickness. Expertly blended, track selection on point, hype as fuck, what more could you want.

Black Rave Culture on The Lot Radio

This mix from Black Rave Culture, the collaborative helmed by Amal, James Bangura and Dj Nativesun, is a total vibe. For the most part it's sumptuous house music, including a welcome drop of Midland classic ‘Final Credits’, but there's also forays into bassier wobs, percussive folk music, spacey dub techno, and more. The hosts’ conducting adds to the enjoyable atmosphere, inviting you to get groovy with them.

Goldie b2b DJ Flight ICONS Mix on BBC 6 Music

Two icons of drum ‘n’ joins forces for the ICONS Mix on Mary Anne Hobbs BBC 6 Music show, broadcast ahead of Goldie playing at Glastonbury’s IICON stage. An iconic billing that this half hour of raw, unbridled energy delivers on. It packs plenty into the short runtime, with emotionally impactful top layers often emerging from the driving foundations, bookended by a raucous start and end.

JASSS ‘PURE Guest.60’

Berlin-based Spanish artist JASSS’ moniker sounds like the noise her sets inspire in dancers: an exultant, visceral scream of joy. Often found surging towards climaxes that are almost deranged in their euphoria, she's also a master of the low-end of the spectrum with cataclysmic bass and intricate sound design. This mix is an exemplar of her style, opening through a section of terse, shredded bass and not taking her foot off the pedal as she ducks, dives, climbs and nimbly manoeuvres through stimulating experimental sounds.

dBridge ‘Ilian Tape Podcast Series 106’

Exit Records boss dBridge showcases his murky and experimental style of drum ‘n’ bass in this mesmerising mix for Ilian Tape. It opens eerily with ominous ambient textures and a feather-ruffling vocal, and then leans into this unnerving yet gripping energy. Even the bright moments have an uncanny quality, with synths that sound like melting plastic or airy pads that echo and fray with a hint of menace.
