The Cover Mix: Björk
The Icelandic icon drops the most powerful mix of the year
Perhaps the single most consistently creative and innovative artist on the planet, Björk has been immersed in and inspired by club culture since before her 'Debut' in 1993.
Quite simply, she's an electronic music superstar.
Björk's forthcoming album Utopia, co-produced by Arca with production on one track by Rabit, is a lush, emotional electronic affair. Her 40 minute mix - a global exclusive - is equally lush and atmospheric, and actually makes a great taster for Utopia with its nods to strings, to Arca and to some of her favourite new female new vocalists like Kelela and Kelly Lee Owens, as well as classical pioneers like Steve Reich.
But it's the mood you need to focus on: this is a late night listen that's also a timely reminder of how good she is on Pro Tools. After Mixmag interviewed Björk, the actual mix didn't arrive until the new issue almost went to press. One listen and you'll hear why.
With a tracklist that features some of the most cutting edge and innovative artists in the game, we're more than thrilled to present one of the most powerful and unique cover mixes we've ever done, if not one of the best mixes released this year, period.
Here's what Björk had to say about the mix:
"dearestest music-lovers !
here is a little set for you . it is most definitely flute and air themed and perhaps reveals the sonic environment my ears were in last year . i thank all the musicians . kindness , björk."
