24-year-old man dies after a fall at Barcelona nightclub

A 24-year-old man has died after suffering a fall at Barcelona’s Sala Apolo nightclub earlier this week.

Liam Hampson, from Queensland Australia, died in the early hours of Tuesday, October 18. His death is currently being currently treated as an accident. Sala Apolo issued a statement following his death yesterday.

“These are sad and very painful moments,” reads a post from Sala Apolo on Instagram. “First of all, for all the people affected by the unforeseeable accident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, October 18, in the outdoor facilities of Apolo venue.

“It’s been sad as well for those of us who are part of this organisation,” the statement continued. “The management and the entire Apolo team are beyond appalled by what happened, and we express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Liam Hampson.”

The 24-year-old rugby player, who played for the popular Queensland club the Redcliffe Dolphins, was travelling across Europe with friends.

Though Sala Apolo gave no further details on his death, Spanish news outlet La Vanguardia reported that Hampson fell from a height of 14 metres, and was confirmed as an accident “with no second person involved” following CCTV footage playback.

According to the outlet, CCTV footage showed Hampson get split up from his friends, wandering to a part of the nightclub that was not open to the public at around 4:30AM. Hampson then reportedly jumped over a wall with a 14-metre drop to the patio on the other side.

Liam’s father, Brett Hampson, shared the news on Facebook on Wednesday. “Waking up to the news no one wants to hear, we are devastated to find out that Liam had an accident and sadly has not survived,” he said.

“We are heartbroken, to say the least. Liam had a heart of gold and was a much-loved son, brother, grandson, uncle, and friend.

“Words can not express our grief. We can not thank his mates enough for being there with Liam having the time of his life and assisting in the search for our boy. Our thought are with them.”
