Billy McFarland shares emails in attempt to prove that Fyre Festival 2 is “real”

Fyre Festival founder Billy McFarland has shared a chain of emails in an attempt to prove that the festival’s forthcoming reboot edition is “real”.

It comes amidst speculation that the follow-up edition to the disastrous 2017 event will not go ahead as planned next month, originally projected to take place on the Mexican island of Isla Mujeres from May 30 - June 2.

In February, local tourism directorate on the island, Edgar Gasca, told The Guardian: “We have no knowledge of this event, nor contact with any person or company about it. For us, this is an event that does not exist.”

At the end of March, McFarland announced that the festival will now go ahead in Playa del Carmen, a resort town in the south of Mexico, saying that he “couldn’t ask for a better group of people” to work with.

Last week, officials for Playa del Carmen also denied knowledge of the festival taking place locally, explaining: “There is no registration or planning [of Fyre Festival 2] in the municipality.”

Billy McFarland is now attempting to prove that the festival will go ahead as planned by posting a timeline of ‘confirmation’ emails on social media.

On Saturday, April 5, McFarland explained via Instagram: “FYRE has been working directly with the government of Playa del Carmen (PDC) and their officials since March 5, 2025, to ensure a safe and successful event,”

The post contains apparent emails from local tourism boards, as well as letters and permits allegedly allowing the festival’s go-ahead.

“FYRE has operated as a good partner with PDC government and has followed the proper processes and procedures to lawfully host an event,” he claims.

The festival is currently advertising merchandise via its official Instagram page, with T-shirts, bucket hats, and caps emblazoned with the slogan: 'Fyre Festival 2 is real.'
