The Tottenham-based hi-fi listening bar MOKO has announced it will be closing its doors this September, one year after opening.

Launched by DJs-turned-entrepreneurs Bradley Zero and Nathanael Williams in August 2023, MOKO acted as the sister venue to the pair’s already successful Peckham venture, JUMBI, also a hi-fi listening bar and event space.

The news was announced yesterday (August 14) via a statement on Instagram, confirming MOKO would be approaching its "final chapter" in the coming months: “Starting this week, regular daytime trading hours and restaurant operations at MOKO will conclude. "

"HOWEVER, we’ll continue to open on Friday and Saturday nights to host the remaining ‘CLUB MOKO’ events until the end of September, with special anniversary closing events planned for the final weeks," the statement continues.

Much like JUMBI, the venue was founded with the intention of shining a light on the “sounds and flavours of the Afro-Carribean diaspora”.

With its state-of-the-art soundsystem designed by bespoke audio studio Friendly Pressure and food provided by Safiya Robinson (a plant-based chef creating recipes inspired by her British, Jamaican and African American heritage), MOKO hosted a number of exciting DJs and events this year including SICARIA, Taylor Jae and Sample Chief’s Highlife & Moonlight party.

The site of the bar previously housed the nightclub Five Miles, which was also forced to close its doors in 2020, despite campaign efforts to save it.

Meanwhile, across the river, JUMBI remains a popular Peckham hang-out, having recently sold out an event celebrating its 2nd birthday on July 27, with DJs Charlie Dark, Tash LC and Keyrah joining Bradley Zero himself on the line-up.
