Derrick Carter demonstrates Chicago's commitment to house music in 'My City' with WAV
"Chicago is not just a city, it's a people"
For the fifth episode of Mixmag and WAV's My City series, American house pioneer Derrick Carter takes us around Chicago - the birthplace of his beloved music genre.
Acting as our official Windy City tour guide, Carter shows us Chicago's original house music locations and the training grounds on which he first cut his teeth behind the decks. Ahead of his gig at the Midwest's vanguard nightclub, Smartbar, Carter takes us to Gramaphone Records - his old stomping grounds and workplace which has become one of the world's most iconic dance music record stores.
"To me, Chicago is not just a city, it's a people," says Carter. "The thing that has kept me in Chicago more so than anything else is I feel like the best version of me that exists... exists here."
Mixmag and WAV have teamed up on a new original series called My City, which takes viewers on intimate tours of cities with artists who live, breathe and make up the fabric of the history and future of each destination.
