Glasgow DIY venue EXIT under threat of closure amidst planned redevelopments

Glasgow DIY nightclub EXIT is under threat of closure following proposals to redevelop the local area, the venue has said.

In an Instagram post shared over the weekend (March 9), the community-run venue explained that Regent Property – a property management company based in Glasgow – is “about to submit proposals” to redevelop the area.

Redevelopment plans span 90 Maxwell Street, 40 Fox Street, and 96 Maxwell Street, which is “home to EXIT and a community of artist studios”, the club said.

Proposals include the building of a “new high quality hotel / short-stay apartment accommodation”, as part of a plan to “significantly invest” in Glasgow’s Clydeside.

The site of planned developments sits in the St Enoch area of Glasgow’s city centre, with an aim to draw in “tourism and footfall to the area” through regeneration.

EXIT shared a photo of the club as it stands today – a historic building on the corner of Dunlop Street – alongside a render of the proposed newbuild hotel, which towers above the road.

“There is a current public consultation and they are taking feedback until March 13 before they submit their application to the council.”

EXIT has urged fans to submit feedback in the second round of consultation, which is currently underway until Thursday, March 13. Once a planning application has been submitted, you can also “comment directly to Glasgow City Council”.

EXIT first opened in 2023 as a 400-capacity, artist-run venue, following a crowdfunding campaign to get it off the ground. It boasts a quality curation of artists, ranging from experimental to noise and techno.

Recent bookings at the club include LCY, Sarra Wild, Tasha, Charisse C, Marina Zispin, k means, DJ Lag, and Mantra, among many others.
