IKEA and Swedish House Mafia reveal new Kallax design "made for DJing"

The newest addition to Swedish House Mafia and IKEA’s collaborative collection comes in the form of a brand new Kallax, allegedly built for the home DJ.

The OBEGRÄNSAD collection — first announced in May — will officially launch in October with special limited edition pieces including a turntable, vinyl bag, and more.

SHM and IKEA have now revealed an update to the Swedish decor company’s ubiquitous Kallax shelving unit, made for DJing at home.

“I think it’s really nice in this digital age, going back to something that is so physical,” says IKEA’s Creative Leader James Futcher. "We learned a lot from Swedish House Mafia about the setups needed to make music.

“During the pandemic, we also started seeing people live stream DJ sets from their homes and studios using KALLAX as their stage. And we thought, 'There's a fun opportunity to do a small update of an iconic product for a collaboration around making and listening to music’,” he added.

The latest product to be revealed adds to the collection’s 20 pieces, including the recently unveiled all-black turntable set to hit stores next month.

The newly updated Kallax has been criticised, however, for its awkward shape and shelving setup. In photos of the product in use, the mixer sits below the CDJs and the turntable on a tight, inaccessible shelf. Others pointed out that the unit isn’t big enough for a full setup.

Despite this, the KALLAX still retains its classic cube-shaped shelves fitting for the vinyl DJ, and has been adjusted in height to make it more comfortable when playing.

The OBEGRÄNSAD collection launches in IKEA stores on October 22. Find out more about it here.
