Legendary grime producer Terror Danjah has died

Legendary grime producer Terror Danjah has died, his record label Planet Mu has confirmed to Mixmag.

News of Terror's death first emerged online yesterday when a friend of the late producer and fellow artist, D Power Diesle, told fans: "Terror Danjah has sadly passed away".

The news was confirmed today by Planet Mu, an imprint he regularly released with. "RIP Terror Danjah. You will be missed," the label wrote in tribute on Twitter this morning. "The best ever grime producer."

Terror Danjah – real name Rodney Pryce – first came up as a producer in the early ‘00s, originally as part of the grime collective Nasty Crew alongside the likes of Ghetts, Jammer, and D Double E. At the same time, he became part of Aftershock, another UK grime crew featuring artists like Tinie Tempah and Kano.

Pryce was regarded as one of the most influential grime producers of his era, and helped to pioneer the sound of R&G – which brought together the sounds of R&B and grime – a genre that was also made popular by artists like Sadie Ama and Scratcha DVA.

Over the course of his near 20-year music career, Pryce took to labels like Hyperdub multiple times, as well as Planet Mu, Butterz, and Solid City. He also co-founded his own imprint, Hardrive Records, where he regularly released his own music.

Pryce’s last album was released on Tru Thoughts in 2019, ‘Invasion’, featuring Sir Spyro and Nii-Teiko. The record marked his sixth and final before coming into health issues later that year.

In 2019, Pryce’s family told fans that the grime producer was in a coma. There was no further confirmation about the health scare, though his family said that he was “critically ill”.

In a statement following his passing, Pryce's family wrote: "Thank you all for your love and kind words. Our family ask that you remain respectful during this incredible difficult time."

“Rest in peace Terror Danjah,” The Bug wrote in tribute this morning. “A fantastic producer, big hearted person and criminally underrated outside of Grime circles. I will miss your laughter, sick beatz, and miss the random phone conversations.”
