Motion defends the decision to hold a rave on day of The Queen's funeral

Bristol nightclub Motion has defended its decision to hold a rave on the day of The Queen’s funeral, explaining that the loss of business and the cost of living crisis means they can't shut the venue.

The club will be hosting a free all-night rave, titled "Godspeed," on Sunday night, which will go on until the early hours of Monday morning.

The club has confirmed that it does not believe it is in the position to close its doors and will ensure that ravers can still pay their respects to The Queen by holding a minute's silence both in the queue and in the venue.

This comes after the club was forced to cancel two after-parties due to take place for the Bristol-based festival Tokyo World after the bus company First Bus cancelled the shuttle service from Eastville Park (where the festival is taking place) making the travel from the festival “mission impossible”.

A spokesperson from the venue told Bristol Live: "We were due to host the after parties for the Tokoyo World Festival this week, however, due to the perfect storm of Brexit and Covid-19, First Bus has cancelled the planned transport from Eastville Park to the venue in BS2.

"In light of these being cancelled, and with wages, increasing power costs plus multiple other factors of life in 2022, we felt we were not in the position to keep the venue shut.

"As with everyone else we were truly saddened to hear of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on September 8 and wish the new King all the best in his new role. God Save The King."

The free Godspeed rave was advertised on Motion’s Instagram account on Monday (September 12), and will be full of bass music from local Bristol DJs.

“Plans opened up on Sunday after getting the day off on Monday? Head on down for an inevitable banger of a party for the grand price of nowt. Expect the best in bass music from up-and-coming local talent.

“In addition to this as usual we'll be announcing a carefully selected handful of Bristol and beyond's most exciting DJs and brands, as well as some special guests who'll be announced on the day.”

Tickets for the festival are available for free, however, free tickets are only valid until 00:30AM on Monday morning. Entry after this point will cost attendees £5. To find out more, visit Motion's website here.
