New exhibition in Valencia celebrates the La Ruta del Bakalao club scene

Posters and flyers from the La Ruta del Bakalao club scene are highlighted in a new exhibition called Ruta Gráfica.

The exhibition is held at the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM) in Valencia and is running until June 12.

La Ruta del Bakalao was born out of the death of the Spanish dictator, Francsco Franco in 1973, as culture and music began to grow once again.

Raving formed within nightclubs of Valencia, especially on the highway of El Saler (CV-500), which included halls such as Barraca, Spook Factory, Chocolate, Espiral, NOD, Puzzle and ACTV, which continued from the 80s to the 90s.

In Valencia, this freedom saw the hedonistic revolution of clubbing named La Ruta del Bakalao which is still the biggest clubbing movement of Spain.

At the exhibition there are 86 flyers and 130 posters from the '80s and '90s raving scene with artwork depicting venues including, Barraca, Chocolate, Spook Factory and Espiral.

Artists with work showcased include cartoonists Mariscal, Miguel Catalayud, Sento LLobel, Micharmut, Daniel Torre, Manel Gimeno and Ramón Marcos, as well as graphic artists such as Paco Roca.

Alongside artwork, there are interviews with the various agents involved in the design process along with, designers, artists, printers and cultural managers.

Ruta Gráfica is said to hold a “coherent discourse on the beginnings, evolution and apogee of an aesthetic and imaginary highly specific to Valencia, while at once defending its unique artistic and cultural value.”
