Ukraine Resistance Radio launches broadcast for experimental Ukrainian music

A new project aiming to amplify underground Ukrainian artists has launched via Lithuania’s Radio Vilnius, Ukraine Resistance Radio.

The first broadcast aired yesterday, March 19, with a four-hour transmission of experimental music from Ukrainian artists through 2:PM until 6:PM.

Earlier this month, Ukraine Resistance Radio launched an open call to artists asking for music submissions as “a chance to go beyond words and jam available outlets across Europe and internationally with signals of Ukrainian expression”.

The call urged those inside the country working “amidst power cuts, military service, and other obstacles,” and those who have emigrated outside the country in the face of the war.

“We encourage any personal expression — surprising and experimental music, field recordings, noise, experimental and DIY electronics, and other sonic inventions that are often at the edges or unheard,” they explained.

The first broadcast went live yesterday, curated by experimental artist Sophia Bulgakova who currently lives in the Netherlands, as well as Lithuania’s Andrius Mamontovas, DJ and producer Peter Kirn, and Ukrainian experimental artist Dmytro Fedorenko.

Described as an “ad hoc project”, Ukraine Resistance Radio will not only celebrate artists from Ukraine but also “international music allies” from all over the globe.

Of those who submitted initial tracks for the first radio show, selected artists were chosen “with additional sounds and music on other outlets”.

The first call for submissions has now closed, although the project is expected to continue into the future. Listen back to the first transmission here.

This Thursday, fabric is set to host a fundraiser event for Ukrainian charities to commemorate one year since Russia’s invasion. The event will raise money for the K41 Community Fund, Insight NGO and World Central Kitchen.
